Pottery Wheel
Beginners are introduced to the pottery wheel. We start with the components
of the wheel, safety and demonstrating the use of the wheel. Techniques of
wedging and centering the clay are covered in detail. Students learn to open the
clay and create a cylinder. Trimming and glazing techniques are also covered. This is an intimate program with an excellent faculty to student ratio that enables each person to work at their own pace and level.
There are many ways to center the clay, open the clay and bring up the walls of a pot. We show you the techniques that work for most. However, if you're having trouble we will show you other methods to help you become successful. Our goal is to make you successful and help you to find your "style". We spend one-on-one instruction with you in the first class to fully explain the technical aspects of throwing. After that, we work with you on identifying areas of improvement to make you successful.
We will show you what we feel is the most efficient way to "throw" pots. If that doesn't work for you, we will show you other ways to help you become successful. We suggest you come in before starting your class to observe and talk to other students.
The advanced potter will continue on his journey of creating more complex forms such as teapots, dishes, bowls, mugs and more. The theory of design and proportion is also covered, in addition to techniques of throwing larger pots (everybody's goal!). Your experience here will be nurtured by the friends you make. You'll also discover new ways of perceiving the world and your own capabilities.
